City Index Review: Is It Safe? Fees, Withdrawals & Verdict

Our score 4.31/5

Score breakdown

The 30-second verdict

City Index is worth considering if you want to trade CFDs or eligible spread bets across a choice of charting and trading tools. The core trade-off is that these are leveraged derivatives, so a CFD provides no ownership of the underlying asset.

Pros

  • For a round-turn EUR/USD trade of 100,000 EUR, the Standard and MT4 account rows show a total cost of $7, with a 0.7-pip spread and no commission.
  • City Index supports browser-based WebTrader, MT4 and TradingView, with different tools for manual and automated trading.
  • The instrument range includes 84 forex products and 4,700 stock CFDs.

Cons

  • Stock CFDs do not give traders ownership or voting rights in the underlying shares.
  • Leveraged CFD and spread-betting positions held overnight can incur financing charges.
  • Crypto CFDs are not available to UK retail clients.

Our main findings on City Index

The figures below depend on the contracting entity, account tier and payment method chosen; they do not represent a single universal City Index schedule.

What stands out

  • On eligible markets, a guaranteed stop fixes the exit level for a premium if triggered, whereas a standard stop can close at a worse price after a market gap.
  • MT4 automation depends on the desktop or VPS environment, so browser and mobile access should not be mistaken for the full Expert Advisor setup.
  • Card funding is instant but has a minimum, while bank-transfer deposits have no minimum and take three business days to process.

What needs scrutiny

  • Confirm which City Index entity will serve your account before relying on local regulatory or compensation protections.
  • Compare share-CFD commissions and overnight financing with your expected trade size and holding period.
  • Check whether your region permits the instrument you want, particularly crypto CFDs for UK retail clients.

Is City Index safe, legit and regulated?

5/5

City Index operates via distinct group entities, meaning your contracting company determines the regulatory regime and statutory safeguards that apply.

What protection actually applies?

For UK clients, StoneX Financial Ltd is authorised by the FCA, and its covered UK investment entity falls under FSCS protection of up to £85,000 per eligible claimant, per firm, for qualifying claims. This does not cover trading losses, and the protection does not extend worldwide. Australian retail clients are subject to ASIC product-intervention rules, including leverage caps, a 50% margin close-out, negative-balance protection and restrictions on trading inducements; professional clients do not receive all retail protections. The EEA and Singapore frameworks apply through their respective entities, and compensation eligibility depends on the entity and client.

City Index fees, spreads and real trading costs

4.4/5

For a round-turn EUR/USD trade of 100,000 EUR, the Standard and MT4 account rows each show a 0.7-pip spread, no commission and a total cost of $7. This comparison applies only to that trade size and basis.

Trading commissions and account-level pricing

That EUR/USD result does not mean every product is commission-free. City Index describes FX and index pricing as spread-based, with share-CFD commissions where applicable. Share and ETF CFD commissions vary by region: UK and European rates are usually 0.08% with a £10 or €10 minimum, US rates are usually 1.80 cents per share with a $10 minimum, and Asian rates start around 0.08% with a S$10 minimum.

Overnight financing and non-trading fees

Leveraged CFD and spread-betting positions held beyond the daily cut-off can incur overnight financing, generally calculated at the relevant benchmark rate plus or minus 2.50%. Futures do not incur this overnight financing because their cost of carry is built into the spread. Currency conversion is typically charged at 0.50% when a trade involves an asset denominated in a different currency from the account. Inactivity charges also vary by region: the stated schedules include £12 a month after 12 months in the UK, an equivalent $15 charge on inactive CFD accounts in Singapore, and $15 a month after 24 months in Australia.

Account types, leverage and trading conditions

4.45/5

City Index’s terms state that a Standard account has no account-opening minimum, although funding requirements vary by method and account type. Professional status can change the leverage available, but it is subject to eligibility rather than being a standard retail feature.

Demo account and free practice tools

City Index offers a demo account for practising with WebTrader or MT4 using virtual funds. It helps familiarise traders with platform features, but it does not establish how live orders will execute.

Leverage, stop-out levels and risk

For UK retail clients, the maximum leverage is 1:30 on major forex pairs, with limits varying by instrument. Eligible professional clients may access leverage of up to 1:400, so the higher figure should not be treated as a retail account term.

Trading platforms, MT4/MT5 and mobile apps

4.74/5

City Index separates browser-based manual trading from desktop automation and chart-led trading through an external platform. The choice therefore affects how a client analyses and executes trades, not merely which device they use.

PlatformAvailable devicesLimitations
TradingViewWeb, Desktop, MobileTradingView strategy orders are evaluated by its broker emulator; a Pine strategy by itself is not universal live broker auto-execution.
MetaTrader 4Web, Desktop, MobileFull MQL4/EAs/custom-script functionality is desktop/VPS-centric; the browser/mobile clients do not provide the full desktop automation environment.
WebTraderWeb, DesktopProprietary browser platform; Expert Advisors are a MetaTrader feature, not a documented Web Trader feature.

What the trading interface looks like

WebTrader is a browser-based platform for manual trading and charting, usable without installing software locally. City Index also provides mobile apps, while TradingView connects advanced charting directly to a City Index account.

Automation, APIs and copy trading

MT4 supports MQL4 Expert Advisors on desktop or VPS; its browser and mobile clients do not offer the full desktop automation environment. City Index also supports API trading for automated CFD and forex strategies. TradingView strategies use its broker emulator, so unattended live execution requires a compatible broker, API or bridge. MT4’s Signals feature can mirror third-party providers, but City Index does not offer a standalone social-copy service.

Which markets can you trade or invest in?

3.74/5

City Index’s markets are primarily accessed through CFDs or, where permitted, spread bets rather than direct ownership. Stock CFDs do not confer ownership or voting rights, and crypto CFDs provide price exposure without ownership of coins; crypto derivatives are not available to UK retail clients.

Order execution, slippage and performance

3.3/5

City Index acts as principal for CFDs and uses agency execution for eligible exchange-traded derivatives. Market orders can slip when available quotes change rapidly, although eligible markets also have guaranteed stop-loss orders.

Report measured outcomes

City Index reports that more than 99% of trades are executed within one second. This is a broker-reported execution figure, not a guarantee for an individual order.

Disclose limitations

A standard stop can close at a worse price if the market moves through its trigger. A guaranteed stop fixes the exit level on eligible markets, with a premium payable if it is triggered; it does not prevent other orders from slipping as quotes change.

Customer support, research and education

3.85/5

City Index combines account assistance with market information and learning resources, giving clients separate routes for resolving queries and developing trading knowledge.

Customer Support

Clients can contact support by live chat, phone or email. The stated support hours are 24/5.

Market Research and Education

City Index offers market analysis, an economic calendar and price charts. StoneX Trading Academy includes beginner courses, technical-analysis material and risk-management lessons relevant to City Index clients.

Customer reviews, complaints and reputation

What customers say about City Index?

A 2020 Reddit post records one user’s contrasting impressions of the platform and its minimum commission; the comments are anecdotal and may not reflect current charges.

“Currently using City Index for their low spread, clean and easy platform”
“their fees are pretty high (min $10 commission)”

Who should use City Index, and who should avoid it?

City Index’s fit depends on whether you want to practise, automate trades, gain price exposure or prioritise local safeguards.

New traders

Beginners who want to practise before funding can use the demo account and StoneX Trading Academy’s introductory resources. Those seeking a simple way to own investments will find a different product structure here.

Active forex traders

Traders who want to automate forex strategies can use MT4 Expert Advisors on desktop or VPS, or explore API trading. Professional leverage is conditional on qualifying for professional status.

Long-term investors

Investors seeking direct share ownership should note that stock CFDs confer no ownership or voting rights. Holding leveraged CFD or spread-betting positions overnight can also incur financing charges.

Regulation-first customers

UK retail clients can consider the FCA framework and potential FSCS protection for qualifying claims through the covered UK investment entity. Australian retail clients instead fall under ASIC product-intervention rules, so the relevant contracting entity matters.

City Index alternatives worth considering

CMC Markets is worth considering if you want to trade CFDs through a proprietary platform, while IG is a relevant option if you want access to multiple leveraged markets and eligible spread betting. Each has its own product availability and terms, which depend on the client’s country and entity.

Can you open an account in your country?

City Index’s eligibility record refers to retail accounts under StoneX Trading from September 2026; it does not establish access in every country.

How the signup process works

  1. Complete the identity checks; if electronic verification is unsuccessful, City Index may require proof of identity and address, such as a valid passport and a recent utility bill or bank statement.

Final verdict: should you trade with City Index?

Choose City Index if you want leveraged CFD trading or eligible spread betting and are prepared to select the appropriate entity and platform; consider another route if you need direct share ownership or want to avoid overnight financing on leveraged positions.
